The conference will focus around the theme of transmission in its exploration of relationships between cinema and psychoanalysis. This will contribute to discussions of cultural transmission relating to the CRASSH 2007-9 theme.

Various possible modes of Transmission will be explored:

* The transmission of psychoanalytic discourse into film theory (re-visiting and re-assessing 1970s theory, Screen group, Metz, Mulvey etc., evaluating current relations between psychoanalysis and film theory)
* The transmission of psychoanalytic scenarios into filmmaking (e.g. Hitchcock, Lang; can we uncover what was lost in translation? what is the cultural/historical significance of such transmission?)
* Cinema as psychoanalysis: image, scene, time, speech, body, sound (how might cinema transmit psychoanalytically? Can cinema be conceived as a psychoanalytic mode of thought?)

In exploring these forms of transmission, the conference will seek to revisit the history of film theory and look forward to its future, asking whether psychoanalysis still has something to offer film theorists. In addition, the parallel histories (to use the term from the title of Janet Bergstrom's edited volume Endless Night) of cinema and psychoanalysis will be re-examined to shed new light on their past entanglement and possible future collaboration. Finally, through the investigation of scenarios and film form and their (mis)translations and mirrorings of psychoanalytic discourse and thought, approaches to film analysis will be explored.

An Interdisciplinary Humanities Conference

Sponsored by the Global Communication Program and the Peggy & Marc Spiegel Center for Global and International Studies at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, this symposium addresses the relationship of Media to the Global Diaspora. The symposium focuses primarily on the migrations of the past 100 years and how the “living traditions” transmitted by these communities are continually subject to loss, gain and interpretation. Media developed during this same period play a role, both direct and indirect, in this process as these traditions become transplanted into their “new home.”

The symposium has the following objectives:

* To encourage academic discourse focused on transnational migratory populations and the role new media plays in transmitting and sustaining their living traditions.
* To create a forum for researchers in the liberal arts and other disciplines studying the nature, significance and consequence of global migration
* To provide a concert performance of traditional music and dance illustrating the vitality of these living traditions.

We envision this symposium as a celebration of global communication, the liberal arts, and Roger Williams University's mission to “bridge the world.”

* Definitions

New Media -- Essentially modern media, those media technologies that have emerged with the advent of electricity: radio, television, recording, broadcasting, computers, the Internet and the Web and more.

Global Diaspora -- People have been migrating since the dawn of humanity. However, during the past 100-150 years these diaspora have been recorded, documented and analyzed for their economic, political and cultural impact.

Symposium -- A less formal, more intimate gathering of peers and colleagues in a congenial environment for dialogue and discussion on a particular topic. The model comes from Plato's Symposium.

Independent Scholars : "It Has Happened Before, It Will Happen Again": The 'Third' Golden Age of Television Fiction

In 1996 Robert J. Thompson wrote the vastly influential Television’s Second Golden Age: From Hill Street Blues to ER defining the controversial term ‘quality television’. As Thompson himself has stated, a decade after this publication, what was then exceptional and innovative has now become the norm, which suggest we might have entered yet another golden age. However instead of trying to demarcate each and every new wave of golden age, it might be best to claim, like the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica, that ‘it has happened before and it will happen again’.

Despite the spreading of ‘quality’ across the board, however, textual analysis in television studies is still in its infancy. This conference aims to contribute to the growing field of the textual analysis of television series and solicits papers that analyse any aspect of the texts of such shows as Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Heroes, Desperate Housewives, Nip/Tuck, The L Word, Veronica Mars, Dexter, Torchwood, etc. This list of shows is meant to be inspirational rather than conclusive and papers on television series not listed above will also be welcome.

This is an interdisciplinary conference therefore papers are welcome from disciplines that include but are not limited to television studies, film studies, cultural studies, woman’s studies, queer studies, media studies, philosophy, sociology, political science, international relations, literature, psychoanalysis etc.
